The project deploys IoT system at RMFR, which aims to complement the manual peatland data collection. The IoT system consists of sensor nodes on the ground to detect ground water level (GWL), soil moisture and soil temperature. These peatland data is relayed to the Gateway using LoRa technology. It is a free wireless access technology as per regulation by MCMC, hence it is cost-effective. The transmission parameters can be configured in order to ensure coverage and link quality. In other words, the peatland data can be transmitted on a timely basis and can be covered in a large area in the peatland.

The aim of the project is to implement technological and social innovation for peatland monitoring using IoT. The technological innovation includes IoT system deployment at Raja Musa Forest Reserve (RMFR) for peatland monitoring in order to curb potential forest fires and transboundary haze. The social innovation, on the other hand, is to get feedback and input from the stakeholders and local community, right from the design stage until the implementation and monitoring of the system.

The project has helped the Forestry Department to monitor and validate peatland data. especially ground water level (GWL), more efficiently, by complementing the existing manual collection procedures with the deployed IoT system from this project. The IoT system collects the peatland data once in every 10minutes, and an effective and efficient peatland forest monitoring and management can be implemented.

Professor Ir. Dr. Aduwati Sali is currently a Professor at Department of Computer and Communication Systems, Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) since February 2019. She was a Deputy Director at UPM Research Management Centre (RMC) responsible for Research Planning and Knowledge Management from 2016 to 2019. She obtained her PhD in Mobile and Satellite Communications form University of Surrey, UK, in July 2009; MSc in Communications and Network Engineering from UPM, Malaysia, in April 2002 and BEng in Electrical Electronics Engineering (Communications) from University of Edinburgh, UK, in 1999. She is also a Chartered Engineer (C. Eng) registered under UK Engineering Council and a Professional Engineer (P. Eng.) under Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM). She worked as an Assistant Manager with Telekom Malaysia Bhd from 1999 until 2000. She is involved with IEEE as a Chair to ComSoc/VTS Malaysia (2017 and 2018) and Young Professionals (YP) (2015); Young Scientists Network-Academy of Sciences Malaysia (YSN-ASM) as an Honorary Member (since 2020), Chair (2018) and Co-Chair (2017) for Science Policy. She is also the recipient of 2018 Top Research Scientists Malaysia (TRSM) Award from Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM), Finalist of Study UK Alumni Award 2020-21 Professional Achievement Award and the National Finalist, 7th Annual Underwriters Laboratories-ASEAN-U.S. Science Prize for Women 2021. In 2020, she was a Visiting Scientist at KIOS Research and Innovation Centre of Excellence, University of Cyprus, under EU Horizon2020-RISE project.

Aduwati was involved with EU-IST Satellite Network of Excellence (SatNEx) I & II from 2004 until 2009. She is the principle investigator and collaborator for projects under local and international funding bodies; namely Malaysian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE), Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), Research University Grant Scheme (RUGS) (now known as Putra Initiative Grant) UPM, The Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS-COMSTECH) Joint Grants, EU Horizon2020 Research and Innovation Staff Exchange (H2020-RISE), EU ERASMUS+ Capacity Building for Higher Education (CBHE) and NICT Japan - ASEAN IVO.

She gave consultations to Malaysian Ministry of Information and Multimedia, Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education, National Space Agency (ANGKASA), ATSB Bhd and Petronas Bhd. on projects related to mobile and satellite communications. Her research interests are 5G and beyond, radio resource management, MAC layer protocols, satellite communications, satellite-assisted emergency communications, IoT systems for environmental monitoring and 3D video transmission over wireless networks. In 2014, the fateful event of missing MH370 has requested her to be in printed and broadcasting media, specifically Astro Awani, RTM, TV Al-Hijrah, BERNAMA, CityPlus FM, Harian Metro and Metro Ahad, regarding analysis on satellite communication in tracking the aircraft.
